The NSW Liberals have again committed to saving David Berry Hospital, saying that its land should never be sold off and calling on the NSW Labor Government to come clean with the community and detail their plans for the site.
NSW Liberal Leader Mark Speakman said David Berry’s bequest in 1889 established the hospital for the benefit of the people of Berry and the Shoalhaven, and that legacy must be honoured.
“When legislation was introduced into Parliament to protect David Berry Hospital the Liberals supported it and Labor didn’t,” Mr Speakman said.
“They cannot be trusted to keep this hospital.
“Successive Liberal Governments have ruled out any sale of David Berry Hospital, and today the NSW Liberals recommit to this position to provide certainty for the community and ensure this vital health asset remains in public hands.”
Shadow Minister for Health Kellie Sloane said the local community had spoken clearly about the future of David Berry Hospital.
“We want to see David Berry Hospital’s health services safeguarded for the people of Berry,” Ms Sloane said.
“You deserve quality healthcare close to home.
“It is deeply concerning that the NSW Labor Government has hidden the full results of their consultation with the community. What are they hiding?”
Liberal for Kiama Serena Copley it’s clear that local residents want David Berry Hospital to remain in public ownership and to continue providing healthcare services to Berry and the wider Shoalhaven community, as it has for more than 100 years.
“Feedback from the Minister’s own consultation confirmed what we already knew - the community values the hospital, wants it to deliver health and wellness services, and supports partnerships with local organisations to strengthen care,” Ms Copley said.
“Labor’s refusal to back this legislation creates unnecessary uncertainty. The people of Berry and the South Coast deserve clarity and confidence that their hospital will not be sold off and that important health services are retained.”
