The NSW Government has welcomed Ausgrid’s proposal to reduce its network prices by 6 per cent in real terms from 1 July 2019, reducing power bills for 1.7 million households and businesses.
This proposal, from NSW’s largest electricity distributor, comes on top of the $100 million a year in efficiencies which have been made since 2013. This will continue to deliver savings of $76 per customer a year.
Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said these prices reductions will have a significant impact on energy bills and easing the everyday cost of living pressures on households and businesses across the State.
“This shows that not only did the NSW Government’s leasing of the poles and wires deliver billions of dollars for major infrastructure, it has also delivered greater efficiencies and lower prices for consumers,” Mr Perrottet said.
“This Government is committed to reducing cost of living pressures. We have increased support for first homebuyers, slashed the cost of Green Slips, offered free car registration to regular toll road users and now network energy prices are falling.”
Minister for Energy and Utilities Don Harwin said as Ausgrid’s prices make up over 30 per cent of the average customer’s bill households and businesses would notice the difference.
“Of course Ausgrid’s proposal to reduce its network prices is on top of what the NSW Government has already done to place downward pressure on the cost of energy,” Mr Harwin said.
“We have legislated to ensure that network prices are lower in 2019 than they were in 2014 and boosted energy rebates by 20 per cent for more than 900,000 households doing it tough.”
Ausgrid’s proposal will now go through public consultation and consideration by the regulator, with its final network prices to be set by April 2019.
